Vermont Collaborators

VT Public Universities

Summary

The US onAir Network will be working with volunteers from Vermont universities, colleges, and nonprofit organizations to oversee the curation and moderation of posts, aircasts (online discussions), and in person events for the Vermont onAir Hub …  related to federal, state, and local elections and government.

Our first outreach will be to University of Vermont partly because of its proximity to the state capital. We have identified many of University of Vermont’s civic engagement, academic, internship and research programs related to making democracy and civic responsibility a focus of higher learning on their campus … for students, faculty, staff, and local community. This post, over time, will have similar information on other collaborating organizations in the state.

Contact ben.murphy@onair.cc for more information on how to involve your organization.

About

The University of Vermont’s onAir chapter will initially focus on training interested undergrad and graduate students on how to curate Vermont onAir content especially submitting Top News articles, events, videos, and information and moderating forums in each post they curate.

Student curators will also work with state senate and house committee chairs to produce aircasts on issues being discussed and bills being proposed in their committees.

During election season, students with other other organizations like the League of Women Voters, will coordinate and produce aircasted debates with candidates.

University of Vermont

Source: About UVM

Since 1791, the University of Vermont has worked to move humankind forward. Today, UVM is a Public Ivy and top research university of a perfect size, large enough to offer a breadth of ideas, resources, and opportunities, yet small enough to enable close faculty-student mentorship across all levels of study, from bachelor’s to M.D. programs. Here, students’ educational experience and activities are enriched by our location — from the energy and innovation of Burlington to the forests, farms, and independent spirit of Vermont. UVM provides students endless ways to explore the world, challenge ideas, and dig in on the most pressing issues of our time.

From service-learning classes and internships to volunteer clubs and local community organizations – UVM’s Civic Engagement Programs (CE) aims to grow a culture of involvement, leadership, and learning through hands-on civic engagement that creates friendships and skills that last well beyond your UVM career.

Student Government

The Student Government Association (SGA) is a student body committed to representing all undergraduate students by working directly with the UVM administration, community leaders, and student groups to ensure that UVM student voices are being heard.

Whether it’s joining one of our 200+ clubs and organizations, running for the Student Government Association Senate, or starting a club of your own, we invite all students to get involved on campus.

Internships

Internships combine classroom learning with work in a professional setting.

They can be paid or unpaid, for credit or not-for-credit, and can take place locally, out-of-state, and in other countries. Internships provide you with valuable opportunities to gain professional experience, confidence, and skills and allow you to better understand your own strengths, interests, and values. They also help you establish your career network and find potential mentors.

Political Science Programs

Source: Department website

The Political Science Department at the University of Vermont offers courses across the discipline, taught by scholar-teachers with outstanding research records and national reputations.

Whether you are interested in American politics, law, women’s issues, political theory, international relations or the politics of different world areas, you will find members of the department teaching courses and doing cutting-edge research in your field of interest.

Our program is focused on the undergraduate student experience. With the exception of a few courses each semester offered by adjunct faculty with substantial professional experience in their fields, every course in the department is taught by full-time faculty—no courses are taught by graduate students.

From biomedical research to philosophy, from Big Data analysis to musical composition, our faculty-scholars engage daily in the pursuit of meaningful and impactful research, scholarship and the creative arts. Our goal remains to translate what we learn or discover at the university into innovations that benefit all facets of society.

On behalf of Vice President for Research Kirk Dombrowski, Ph.D., we invite you to explore the creativity of and the opportunities for students, faculty, and their support staff in the areas of research, scholarship, and the creative arts at the University of Vermont.

All research, scholarship and creative work generated at the University of Vermont is produced by, or under the supervision of, the faculty of the eight colleges that comprise the university.
